Choosing a travel agency in Ghana is a trust decision before it is a price decision. The wrong choice can cost you a refused visa, a lost deposit, or a trip that never comes together. This checklist shows you what a legitimate, honest agency looks like, since 1993.
1. Is It Properly Registered?
In Ghana, travel and tour enterprises are required to be registered and licensed with the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) under the Tourism (Travel Trade Enterprise Registration and Licensing) Regulations, 2019, made under the Tourism Act, 2011. A legitimate agency operates within that framework. Ask whether the agency is GTA-registered — a real one will answer plainly.
2. Does It Promise a “Guaranteed Visa”? Walk Away.
This is the clearest red flag in the whole market.
No legitimate agency can guarantee a visa. Approval — for Dubai, Schengen, the UK, the US, anywhere — is at the sole discretion of the issuing authority, and for the UAE even airport entry is the immigration officer’s decision. Anyone advertising a “guaranteed visa,” “100% approval,” or “visa assured” is being dishonest, and official guidance warns that unofficial agents create real risks of rejection, scams, and document misuse. 3. Understand Real vs Fake Credentials
Credentials are easy to claim and harder to hold. Know the difference.
IATA — Real, but Only if Genuinely Held
IATA Travel Agent accreditation is a real, demanding credential. Some Accra agencies genuinely hold it; many do not. A trustworthy agency claims it only if it actually holds it — and names only the credentials it really has.
ATOL — Not a Ghana Credential at All
ATOL is a UK financial-protection scheme run by the UK Civil Aviation Authority. It does not apply to a Ghana-based agency. If a Ghanaian agency claims to be “ATOL-protected,” that is a misrepresentation. Treat it as a warning sign.
Hajj — Aligned With the Board, Never the Board Itself

4. Is the Pricing Honest?
Flights, hotels, holiday packages, and Hajj costs are all dynamically priced or seasonal. A trustworthy agency quotes against real availability and gives you a clear, itemised quote — it does not publish a permanent fixed “package price” with no basis. A number that never changes is a number to question.
5. The Honesty Questions to Ask
- Are you GTA-registered?
- What does your visa support actually include — and do you ever guarantee approval? (The right answer is no.)
- How is my trip priced, and what’s itemised in the quote?
- Which credentials do you actually hold? (And not IATA/ATOL claims that don’t apply.)
- Who is my point of contact while I’m away?
